Norwegian moves to the cloud
Norwegian operates five websites in 13 languages. Epinova helped the airline upgrade its Optimizely solution and move it from physical servers to the cloud. Strategic advisory and automated release management supported a secure and scalable migration.
Moving to the cloud was more than a technical upgrade. Sustainability is high on Norwegian’s agenda, and the company continuously works to reduce its carbon emissions.
Its initiatives include reducing and recycling plastic waste, promoting sustainable aviation fuel and operating one of the world’s most modern aircraft fleets. Norwegian’s digital operations are also part of this work.
The Optimizely solution previously ran across a large number of physical servers. Moving it to the cloud allows resources and energy to be used more efficiently, supporting Norwegian’s wider sustainability goals.
From an on-premises platform to Optimizely DXP
In 2023, Norwegian initiated a major upgrade and migration project. The starting point was an on-premises Optimizely solution dating back to 2005. The platform was upgraded to Optimizely CMS 12 and moved to the cloud.
Today, the solution includes five websites in 13 languages and numerous integrations with surrounding systems and applications.
Security and scalability were key priorities throughout the project. It was also essential to ensure that all existing functionality and integrations continued to work as expected after the migration to Optimizely DXP.
Norwegian needed a platform that could grow with the organisation and maintain high availability, particularly during periods of heavy traffic.
Automated deployment and release management
Epinova helped Norwegian implement automated deployment and release management for new functionality.
This has made releases more efficient and reduced potential sources of error. It also allows technical resources to be used more effectively.
A partnership since 2010
Norwegian and Epinova have worked together since 2010. During this time, we have delivered major projects, continuous development and ongoing support.
Epinova was responsible for the entire upgrade and migration project, from strategy and advisory services to development, launch and support.
Our work has covered project management, architecture, frontend and backend development, performance and security, all in close collaboration with Norwegian.
The result
The upgraded platform was successfully launched in the summer of 2024 and handled high levels of traffic.
Norwegian has highlighted the improved editing experience, strong performance, increased security and better integration with mobile platforms and its new booking system.
The cloud-based platform also provides a more scalable foundation for future development and supports Norwegian’s sustainability goals.
